Jamie R,
Check out the research by John Lott. Every year firearms owned by law abiding citizens are used over 2 million times in self defense. How does that contrast with the ~10,000 suicides each year with a firearm? Now don't get me wrong, each suicide is a trajedy that is avoidable, but not by denying me my God given right to self defense. Firearms are illegal in England and they have a murder rate with firearms greater than here. Ditto Australia. Now Switzerland which requires every military aged male possess a fully-automatic rifle has one of the lowest murder rates. It's a society thing, not a tool thing.
